One of the most debated questions in psychology: how much of your intelligence is inherited, and how much comes from your environment? Modern genetics research gives us surprisingly clear answers.

What Twin Studies Reveal

The most powerful evidence comes from studies of identical twins raised apart. These twins share 100% of their DNA but different environments. Remarkably, their IQ scores correlate at about 0.75 — meaning genetics accounts for roughly 75% of IQ variance in adults.

Fraternal twins (50% shared DNA) show correlations of about 0.45, further confirming the genetic contribution. Adopted children's IQs correlate more strongly with biological parents than adoptive parents by adulthood.

The Heritability Number

Scientists estimate the heritability of IQ at 50–80% in adults. Importantly, heritability is not destiny — it means that within a given population and environment, genetic differences explain 50–80% of IQ variation. Change the environment dramatically and you change the outcome.

Environmental Factors That Matter

Early childhood nutrition, education quality, exposure to toxins like lead, socioeconomic status, and cognitive stimulation all measurably affect IQ. The Flynn Effect — the observed rise in IQ scores across generations — demonstrates that environmental improvements can shift average IQ by 30 points over a century.

The Bottom Line

Your genes set a range for your cognitive potential. Your environment, choices, and effort determine where within that range you end up. Neither is destiny.
