Average IQ by Country

Global data · 5 min read

Research by Richard Lynn and others has compiled average IQ estimates by country, based on psychometric testing data. These figures represent population averages and should be interpreted with significant caution — they reflect educational, nutritional, and environmental conditions as much as innate intelligence.

Why Do Countries Differ?

Differences in average IQ between countries largely reflect differences in educational systems, nutrition, healthcare access, and economic development — not innate genetic differences between populations. Countries that have invested heavily in early childhood education and nutrition show dramatic IQ improvements over generations, consistent with the Flynn Effect.

Important Caveats

National IQ averages are estimates with significant methodological limitations. Test samples may not be representative. Cultural biases in tests affect results. And as environmental conditions improve, average IQ scores rise — demonstrating these are not fixed numbers.
