IQ in Children
Parenting & Science · 7 min read
Understanding IQ development in children helps parents and educators provide the right support at the right time. Here is what science tells us about how intelligence develops from infancy through adolescence.
How IQ Develops in Childhood
IQ scores become increasingly stable as children age. Before age 5, scores are highly variable and not predictive of later intelligence. By age 10, scores show moderate stability. By age 16, IQ scores are relatively stable and predictive of adult scores.
Early childhood is a critical period for cognitive development. Nutrition, stimulation, language exposure, and emotional security during the first 5 years have lasting effects on cognitive development.

When to Test a Child's IQ
Formal IQ testing is most reliable from age 6 onwards. Testing is recommended when a child shows signs of exceptional giftedness (to access appropriate educational programs) or significant learning difficulties (to identify learning disabilities and appropriate support).
How to Support Cognitive Development
Reading together daily, engaging in open-ended play, exposing children to music and arts, encouraging questions, limiting passive screen time, and ensuring adequate sleep and nutrition are the most evidence-backed ways to support cognitive development.
